You are not obliged to report an **[accident](/jobs/car-repairs)** to the police immediately if no emergency services were required at the scene. You do however have to report the accident to the police within **24 hours** if you didn’t exchange contact details at the scene with the other party involved. Failing to do so is a criminal offence and can lead to a fine of up to £5,000 or even a prison sentence. You can also call 101, which is the non-emergency number for the police, to make your report. You also have to tell your insurance company. Even if you are not planning to claim from your insurer you must inform them about the accident. The timeframe for this can vary from insurer to insurer but when in doubt do so as soon as possible. If you don’t comply it may invalidate your policy. ### ❔ How to complete an accident report? There is no official form in the UK to report an accident as there is in EU countries. However, you should exchange the following details at the scene: * Name, address and contact details * Name and address of the vehicle owner if it belongs to someone else * Vehicle registration number * Insurance details if someone was injured. Even if someone has no obvious injuries it pays off to share your insurance details in case a person may have suffered injuries that weren’t visible at the time. In addition, it is a good idea to note the time and date of the incident, road and weather conditions, and witness contact details. If you have a cell phone it can be useful to take pictures of any damage and the scene of the accident. ### Online report of a road traffic incident You can also report a traffic accident online with the Metropolitan Police. The online **“Report a road traffic incident”** section gives you the option to search an interactive map for the exact location and will lead you through various questions. Depending on your answers the site will tell you whether you are legally obliged to report the incident or not. ### Need to repair your [car following an accident](/jobs/car-repairs)? The DVLA, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, is in charge of that. They oversee the two current systems: one for Great Britain and one for Northern Ireland. The system for Great Britain dates back to 2001 while the one for Northern Ireland is very similar to the original one from 1904. Both systems use the international vehicle registration code GB. **Each license plate in the UK is made up of the following: ** * 2 letters identifying the area code where the car was first registered, called a memory tag. * 2 numbers that tell you when the car was first registered, called the age identifier. * 3 random letters. They never include I and Q as they can be too easily confused with 1, 0, or O. In addition the DVLA doesn’t allow combinations that could be deemed offensive. ### ✔️Compliant license plate All number plates in the UK must be made from reflective material. Industry-standard size is 520 mm × 111 mm. Rear plates should be either the same size or 285 mm × 203 mm. The front plate always shows black characters on white and the rear plate has black characters on yellow. Characters need to adhere to a certain standard of height, size and need to be in Mandatory font. The service provider making the license plate must be a registered number plate supplier and approved by the DVLA. ### ❌ Non-compliant or missing plate It is important that your license plate shows your registration number correctly - you are not allowed to rearrange any digits or make them harder to read on purpose. If you fail to comply you could not only be fined up to **£1,000** but your car will also fail its **[MOT](/jobs/vehicle-testing-re-testing)**. ### License plate information The license plate provides access to a lot of information about a car. * If you are buying a car you can immediately identify how old it is. A car owner is permitted to use an age identifier that is older but not newer than the vehicle. * In case your car gets stolen it can get more easily identified by someone remembering the area code letters. * You can find out if a car is up to date on its tax or if it has been registered as SORN (off the road). ### Can I personalise my license plate? **1 - License plate number** You do have the possibility in the UK to choose the registration number of your car. You can either buy it online from the DVLA or at an auction. If you want to use a number that is currently not in use you can ask to have it assigned to your vehicle. Keep in mind that when you buy your dream license plate at an auction or through a dealer you will usually have to pay quite a bit more than when going through the DVLA directly.
In order to get a personalised number plate your car has to be registered and taxed in the UK. Certain restrictions do apply like not being allowed to use a newer age certifier. **2 - Flags & symbols** You are allowed to add a Union Flag, Cross of St George, Red Dragon of Wales, or Cross of St. Andrew to the left side of your number plate. In addition, you can add national identifiers like GB, UK, SCO, CYM, and WALES. ### Change license plate Is your license plate damaged, making it unreadable? It is important to change it because driving with an illegible license plate is prohibited. On the other hand, you are allowed to keep your license plate when you change your car. This way you don’t have to pay for and memorise a new one! ### Where to make a license plate? You can only get a number plate made up from a registered number plate supplier. The DVLA can tell you which suppliers in your area are authorised. You will need to show proof that you are allowed to use the registration number (like the V5 vehicle registration certificate) and of course an ID. Different types of license plates will have different prices. There was even a case when someone paid over £500,000 for the license plate of their dreams! But don’t worry - as long as you are not too fussy with about personalised number plate they are relatively cheap. ### How to change a license plate? Most motorists leave it to professionals to change their car's license plate. Obviously, you will have to pay for the labor, which will vary from garage to garage. [Get quotes](/jobs/new?job_task_type=67 "cta") **If you want to change them yourself, here are the steps to follow:** * Disassemble the old plates (front and back) by removing the rivets that secure the plate. The easiest method is to use a drill. * Drill out the new plates, being careful to match the holes with those on the bumper. * Secure the plate to the bumper using riveting pliers. Place the plate on the holder, then insert the first rivet. Press the pliers and when you hear a "click", it means that the rivet is in place. * Do the same with the second rivet. * Afterward, you can attach the second plate. |**Need to service your car? The battery is charged while driving and does not need to be connected to a recharging station. In other words, full hybrids are self charging hybrid cars. * **Plug in hybrid cars (PHEV)**: A plugin hybrid runs on both petrol and electricity, but is predominantly electric. A plug-in hybrid’s battery is charged with a cable at a charging station and drives like a "pure" electric car on shorter trips. Refueling is relatively fast. Below you can read more about the classic hybrid car. ### How do hybrid cars work? While driving, the car automatically switches between the combustion engine and the electric motor. **Starting the vehicle** The car starts with its electric motor. **Normal driving** The car adjusts the amount of electricity needed according to your speed and your driving style. When you increase the speed, the car switches to the combustion engine - and the battery starts charging. This is the way a self charging hybrid works. **Acceleration and high speed** The petrol engine takes over when accelerating, and the electric motor works together with the combustion engine when your car has to maintain a high speed, e.g. on the motorway. **Brake and stop** The battery of the electric motor is recharged when you slow down or brake. This is done via an energy recovery unit (kinetic energy), which is activated when the car slows down or brakes. ### ℹ️ Pros and cons of a hybrid car **✔️ Benefits of a hybrid car** The biggest advantage of a hybrid car is its low CO2 emissions. Since the petrol engine is combined with an electric motor, the car's fuel consumption is significantly reduced. As a hybrid car driver, you therefore save on fuel costs and help the environment at the same time. In addition, this type of car is very quiet when running on battery, which reduces noise pollution considerably compared to cars with combustion engines. A hybrid car has automatic transmission, which for many drivers is a positive thing. You can refuel relatively quickly compared to a regular petrol car. Hybrid cars run with great fuel economy! This is because the electric motor supports the fuel engine at high speeds. **❌ What is the downside of hybrid cars?** In most hybrid cars, the combustion engine is the primary source of energy. Once the electric motor is discharged, the car works completely like a petrol car and pollutes just as much. Consequently, the combustion engine also causes the same noise level as petrol and diesel cars when the hybrid car has switched off the electric motor. The price can also be too high for many drivers: A hybrid car costs much more than a petrol or diesel car. At the same time, there are not many of the smaller car models in hybrid versions, so the price level is generally high. Sometimes, the silent hybrid car can pose a danger to pedestrians and cyclists who may not hear it coming. Not all models of this type of car can have a towbar fitted. So if you often find yourself in need of a trailer for example, it can be a challenge. ** Plug-in hybrid car** A plug-in hybrid car differs from full hybrid cars in that a plug-in has a much greater range than the so-called conventional hybrid. Their battery is simply bigger. Their range can be up to 35 miles when driving on the electric motor. When the electric motor is discharged, the petrol motor takes over. Therefore, plug-in hybrids are very suitable for city driving if you want to keep fuel levels down and drive more green. Plug-in hybrids also have automatic transmission, making city driving even easier. However, the range depends on several factors, and is reduced if (for example) it is cold (very reduced in frost), at high speed, if other electrical components are turned on, or if the battery is not fully charged. You also have to take into account that you need a charging station either in your own home or close to where you live, as this type of car is not a self charging hybrid. On the other hand, especially in larger cities, you can park for free in several charging parking spaces with a plug-in hybrid car (but not a conventional hybrid, which does not need to be charged). ** Price for a hybrid car** The price of a hybrid car depends on several factors. First of all, a plug-in hybrid car will be more expensive than a conventional hybrid car due to its longer range. A hybrid car price is generally higher than 23,000 pounds. ## Which hybrid car should you choose? A lot of people debate which cars are the best hybrid cars. But the type of hybrid car that best suits you depends on your needs, as well as your budget. If you drive almost exclusively in city areas, a full hybrid car will be fun to drive. This type of car is not a limitation in terms of charging, as recharging happens automatically when you accelerate or when you brake. Lexus and Toyota both have wide ranges of models for this type of vehicle. A plug-in hybrid car will be interesting if you need more range. However, the purchase price will be higher and the fuel consumption will be greater when the battery is discharged. At the same time, plug-in hybrids weigh a lot because they have a relatively large battery next to the combustion engine. If you buy a plug-in hybrid, you must also be prepared to have a charging station set up at your home or find one close by so that you can have a fully charged electric motor every day. Summer tyres have poorer braking properties than winter tyres when the road surface gets colder, which can be a risk. In addition to security, there is also the economic aspect. Summer tyres provide poorer fuel economy than winter tyres when driving on cold roads! ### Cleaning If you change tyres yourself, it is important that you clean or wash the bolts, nuts and wheel hubs thoroughly, as this minimizes the risk of serious defects, rust and impact on the steering. ### Check the tread patterns Always check that the tread patterns complies with the legal requirement of at least 1.6 mm tread depth. A common tip to check this is to put in a 20p coin in the tyre's thread. If it obscures the outer rim, then you're good, because it's slightly less than 1.6 mm. But legal requirements are one thing, and security is something else. To get the best road grip, you should not drive with tyres that have a tread depth of less than 3 mm depending on, among other things, tyre width. This way, you make sure your tyres are as secure as they can be. ### Examine the wear patterns If you experience uneven wear on your tyres, it is recommended to buy new tyres; alternatively, you can make sure that the least worn tyres are mounted at the rear. Be aware that the car will most likely need a tracking/**[wheel alignment](/jobs/steering/wheel-alignment)** before the tyre change if you notice uneven wear. ### Tighten the bolts Whether you change the tyres yourself or have it done by a professional, you must always make sure that the bolts are retightened after a few miles of driving. ### Check the tyre pressure Once the tyres have been replaced, be sure to check their pressure if the garage has not done it for you. Incorrect tyre pressure results in unnecessary wear, bad steering and poor fuel economy. ### Get tyre tracking Regardless of whether you change tyres yourself, or have it done by a professional, you should get a wheel alignment at least every second or third year. This way you make sure that the wheels have the correct geometry and angle on the road. ### Swap tyres To avoid wearing the tyres out too quickly, it may be a good idea to swap the tyres. Basically, this can be done when the car goes through a service inspection. Talk to your mechanic about whether your tyres have the right properties for them to be swapped around. ### Store your tyres correctly If you need to replace your tyres, you need to make sure the current set of tyres are stored correctly when you dismount them. It’s not unimportant how you store the set you are not driving on. If the tyres are mounted on rims and filled with air, they must be hung up by the rims or stacked - preferably in tyre bags but preferably on a rack. There are three types of diesel fuels. * **B7** is the most widely used standard diesel. It contains a 7% bio component called fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). * **B10** iis a newer type of diesel that contains higher levels of biofuel – to a maximum of 10%. It has not yet been introduced in UK, but has been rolled out in France. * **XTL** is a synthetic diesel, and is not derived from petroleum. Part of it comes from paraffin oil and gas. ### Petrol Like diesel, there are 3 main types of petrol. This type of fuel will always be indicated by an E in a circle (E for Ethanol). * **E5** corresponds to both SP95 and SP98 labels. It contains up to 5% bioethanol, a fuel made from agricultural feedstock like corn or other crops. * **E10** is a petrol type containing 10% bioethanol. It has not yet been introduced in the UK but will probably **[be rolled out in 2021](/blog/e10-what-does-it-mean)**. * **E85** contains 85% bioethanol. It’s not commercially available in the UK, but can be found across Europe - especially in France where it’s called Super Ethanol. ### Autogas * **LNG** stands for Liquified Natural Gas, and it’s particularly common for heavy vehicles. * **H2** means hydrogen. The advantage of this fuel is that it does not produce CO2. However, it costs a lot of energy to produce. * **CNG**, or Compressed Natural Gas, is the same gas used to heat homes. It consists of methane stored under high pressure. * **LPG** stands for Liquid Petroleum Gas. This fuel is a mixture of butane and propane. ### What is the future of car fuels in the UK? Before buying a car, it is important to learn more about the different fuels available, and which is compatible with the car. And, in the future, [the landscape of fuel types might change](https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/driving-advice/what-is-the-best-fuel-for-my-car-a-guide-to-different-fuel-types), as newer mixtures of bioethanol take over the market and we move towards a more green future. As more and more cars in Europe become compatible with greener fuels, the petrol in the UK might contain even more biofuel, working as a stopgap solution before we convert to a purely electric car fleet. **[As the government decided to ban the sale of all petrol and diesel cars by 2040](https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/uk-to-ban-new-diesel-and-petrol-vehicles-by-2040)**, initiatives will have to be introduced to make this transition easier. Luckily you do not need any special cleaning products to get rid of the coronavirus. You can use normal cleaning products such as detergent or special car cleaning products if you have them at home. Please be careful before using it and check if the products can be used on the materials of your car. It is not advisable to use sanitizer as it is bad for your car's material, such as the leather and can leave stains on the materials. The only spots where you can use a sanitizer to clean your car are the doorhandles. Please be aware though that you have to use a hand sanitizer that contains a minimum of 70% alcohol as it otherwise does not get rid of viruses, only bacteria. Furthermore, sanitizer cannot be used instead of cleaning as it does not remove dirt. ## How should I clean my car? The most effective way to clean your car coronavirus-free is to spray the cleaning product or the detergent on to the different surfaces, let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse it off with clean water. You can use this procedure to clean the doorhandles (both inside and outside), the steering wheel, the gearstick, the regulators and knobs (such as the radio, etc.), the handbrake, the driving mirror and the petrol cap. It is not advisable to let the cleaning product sit on the material for too long as this could be damaging for the different materials. To clean the touchscreen it is best to use a cleaning wipe or a dry wipe with detergent to not damage the screen. As mentioned above the car offers many surfaces for the virus and the more surfaces there are, the more the virus can spread out. You should, therefore, remove any items from your car that are unnecessary, such as decorations or accessories, a blanket, pillows, clothes or trash. ## Keep your AC running on fresh air When driving your car make sure that it is running on fresh air. The virus can spread if there is no air circulation, so you should make sure that your air condition is not running on a setting where the air from the inside gets re-circulated. If you are not sure about what settings your AC is running then you can also just open a window to get fresh air into your car without using the air condition at all. It is recommended in general to have the air pollution filter of your car changed once a year to prevent it from spreading germs and bacteria. [center][Get quotes on a car service](/jobs/new?job_task_type=50 "cta")[/center] --- ## Tyres and wheels Longer drives affects the car's tyres. If your car's tyres are worn, or if the wheels are not aligned, you should check with your mechanic if it's time to get your tyres and/or wheels fixed. If, for any reason, the tyres have skewed angles or the car's tyre tracking is out of balance, the following happens: * This results in greater driving uncertainty because the car's steering does not work properly. * You wear more on one part of the tyres than others, which is both expensive in the long run, because you have to buy new tires much earlier, and because you need more fuel to optimize the driving. * Fuel economy gets worse, so you need to spend more money on petrol - subsequently, the environment is more affected over time. [center][Get quotes on a wheel alignment](/jobs/new?job_task_template_id=256 "cta")[/center] --- ## What can you do yourself? * **[Winter tyres](/jobs/change-of-winter-tyres)**: The tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three quarters of the tyre, but we recommend at least 3mm tread depth. * Too many drive around with less than 1.6mm and are thus illegal and potentially dangerous tyres. Make sure you are not one of them! Use the 20p test to check whether your tyres are legal. If the outer rim is visible, your tyres are illegal and you should get them changed as fast as possible. * **Make sure the radiator coolant** and windscreen wash is frost proof. You can check this by taking a sample of it in a straw and storing it in your freezer overnight. If the fluid is frozen, you should make sure to switch it with a frost proof version. * **Sprinkler heads**: In sleet, rain and snow the windscreen is exposed to extra dirt/grit. The sprinkler heads can easily blocked by this, but luckily these are easily cleaned. Simply use a small pin to clean them and make sure the spray is correctly on the windscreen and not spraying the car next to you! In this article, we will help you get started so you can make the right decision. We also help you get an overview of the many types of gearboxes found in modern cars and how they work. [center][Get quotes for gear repair](/jobs/new?job_task_type=63 "cta")[/center] --- ## Manual gear vs automatic transmission In a car with a manual transmission, there are 5 or 6 forward gears and 1 reverse gears that the driver of the car changes between, while cars with automatic transmission perform the necessary gear changes automatically. British car owners have traditionally and predominantly driven manual gear. Autobutler's mechanics estimate that about 80% of the total British car fleet has manual gear. However, the number of automatic transmission cars on the roads has increased a lot over the past 30 years. In 1985, only 5% of British cars had automatic transmission, while 20% own a car with automatic gears today. In 2017, **[40% of the cars sold to the British market had automatic gears](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/news/automatic-gearbox-sales-increase-70-per-cent-since-2007/)** - so the Brits are getting more used to this kind of transmission. The benefits of driving a car with automatic transmission are, of course, that you do not have to change gears at all. It's about comfort. Especially when driving in queues, it is incredibly nice to have automatic transmission, so you don't have to concentrate on gear changes. If you buy a car with a manual transmission, however, you will enjoy the feel of the control and grip with the gear change. Many car owners like the feel of having the manual transmission control. Besides this, for some cars it also seems like the manual gear is cheaper to maintain in the long run. ## Automatic transmission - how it works The "ordinary" automatic transmission is electronically controlled in the gearbox and operates on a hydraulic system. And since the gearbox is designed to change to a new gear when the revolutions of the car change, it also means that the fuel economy is good with automatic transmission. As the name suggests, the driver of the car does not have to switch gears manually. The most common settings of the gear stick are P for parking, R for reverse, N for neutral, and D for drive. Read more in our blog on **[how to drive with automatic transmission](/blog/driving-automatic-gear)**. Automatic gearboxes are often designed so that in the center of the gears there is a large cogwheel - the “sun gears” - which transmits the power from the engine. Around the cogwheel are a number of small gears, called planet gears (like planets around the sun). They have different sizes and can also be interconnected and separated. And encircling them is another large cogwheel, which transmits the power from the planet gears, which then transfers the power to the wheels. Gear shifts occur in a fluid transition between the various planet gears, which makes driving smoother and quieter than if you have to disengage and engage through the clutch with manual gears. Many cars from e.g. **[Ford](/carbrands/ford)** has a version of automatic transmission called Power Shift. It works by having the gears reacting to the pressure on the accelerator even better and subsequently get a better grip - so if you step hard on the speeder, the car can accelerate relatively better and faster. In addition, there is a CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) gearbox on the market. It’s characterized by having a single chain or belt which adjusts between two drums, depending on speed and revolutions. In this automatic gearbox, the transition is therefore even more smooth than when you have a gearbox with gears and shafts. It is important to remember **[regular servicing](/jobs/car-service)** of the car's fully automatic transmission. This is because the gearbox is more prone to direct damage and wear over time than manual gearboxes, where **[the clutch](/jobs/clutch-replacement)** is more exposed to wear. For the service inspection, the fully automatic gearbox must be cleaned of deposits and other wear-related contaminants in the gearbox oil. ### Semi-automatic gearbox In a semi automatic gearbox, the clutch is still a part of the transmission (but not the clutch pedal), while a computer maintains the gear changes automatically. How the semi-automatic gearbox works in practice is very different from car to car. In some cars, you do not do anything at all when changing gears and can let the engine and electronics do the work for you. In others, you need to "tell" the engine when you want to gear up or down. You push the gear lever in the direction you want, and then the electronics shift gears for you. The actual change is made in a so-called "**[actuator](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actuator)**". Finally, other cars give you the option to choose for yourself whether you want to be completely hands-free or use the gear stick for gear changes. From a financial point of view, buying a car with a semi-automatic transmission can be advantageous because it requires less maintenance in the long run. If something breaks in the fully automatic gearbox, the mechanic has to go all the way into the gearbox to repair it and this can be expensive. With the semi-automatic gearboxes, you have a clutch, which is the part mostly exposed to wear, rather than the gearbox, and the clutch is somewhat cheaper to repair than the gearbox is. The cars most often equipped with semi-automatic gearboxes are **[Peugeot](/carbrands/peugeot)**, **[Citroën](/carbrands/citroen-ds)**, **[Volkswagen](/carbrands/volkswagen-vw)**, **[Audi](/carbrands/audi)**, **[Škoda](/carbrands/skoda)** and **[Seat](/carbrands/seat)**. Of course, each brand can have their own way of designing the gearbox, but these are the typical car brands that use the semi-automatic system. ### DSG-gearbox The DSG gearbox is in a way a mix between manual and automatic gear, in that there is a clutch in the car. This is unlike other fully automatic gearboxes. There is no clutch pedal, but the function of the clutch itself is retained in a dual clutch, which provides for easy and quick gear change. This gearbox is most often found in Audi, Škoda and Volkswagen cars, and thus generally in the larger German vehicle fleet. Some problems with the DSG gearbox are that you need to be more careful with its maintenance. If you do not get service on the DSG gearbox, and make sure to have **[the gearbox oil and oil filter changed](/jobs/oil-change)**, it can only last a relatively short time compared to the manual gearboxes. You should preferably have **[a service inspection](/jobs/car-service)** done per 38,000 miles traveled because the gears in the gearbox may be affected by wear-related dust and sediments. ### Sequential gearbox Some cars also have a sequential gearbox where, as the name suggests, you have to pass each gear whether you are gearing up or down. You therefore shift gears in sequences on a pair of cogwheels, and unlike the manual gearbox, you can only switch to a gear that comes before or after the current one. This is because the gears are "in line" as opposed to the H format, which you know from a manual transmission. Finally, the advantage is that you can shift between the gears faster and get a faster acceleration, which is why the sequential gearbox is found in many racing cars. ## Active Shift Control Recently, **[Hyundai](/carbrands/hyundai)** developed an improved version of the transmission in hybrid cars. The hybrid car is special in that it has both a gasoline and an electric motor. The great advantage of this car is that it uses the electric motor at times when ordinary petrol cars have the highest fuel consumption - especially during start-up and acceleration. In other words: When fuel consumption is highest, the hybrid car uses the electric motor. This gives a really good fuel economy and is also good for the environment. However, Active Shift Control technology does even more for fuel economy, gearshift and gearbox durability. At the same time, the acceleration is getting better. This is done by ASC, also known as Precise Shift Control, which optimizes the momentum and transfer of power to the wheels by streamlining the gear shift speed. This is achieved by a sensor in the electric motor detecting the revolutions in the gearbox, which is then synchronized with the electric motor. This one will then step in when gears are changed. In this way, energy losses are avoided by up to 30% due to the more smooth gear shift, where the electric motor keeps the car's revolutions high throughout the shift. The gear change time is reduced from 500 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds and the friction in the gearbox is less - which increases durability. The technology is first introduced in Hyundai hybrid cars, and then in the well-known Kia models.
